Distinguished and Famous people from Woollahra

🎨 Margaret Olley

Margaret Olley bought the Duxford Street house in Paddington in 1964, attracted partly by the old hat factory behind it as a working space. Rooms and accumulated objects became recurring subjects in her still lifes and interiors. Travel and periods in other houses interrupted the association, but she returned and worked there until her death in 2011. The apparently crowded domestic setting was also an intensely observed artistic world. Her generosity towards galleries and emerging artists added another dimension to a life in which making, collecting and supporting art were closely connected.

🖌️ John Peter Russell

John Peter Russell returned to Sydney after many years in Europe and spent his last years at Camp Cove, with a studio beside the water. Light on the harbour and colour in his garden offered subjects after the French landscapes associated with his earlier career. Friends and fellow artists included figures such as Van Gogh and Monet. Family wealth had allowed him to work without depending on sales, but limited exhibition also helped leave him less familiar to Australian audiences. The Watsons Bay plaque marks a local home and studio within that international artistic story.

🌿 Karoo, also known as Cora Gooseberry

Karoo, widely recorded as Cora Gooseberry, was an Aboriginal leader and holder of cultural knowledge in coastal Sydney. Her associations included Camp Cove during the 1840s, now commemorated by a Woollahra Council plaque. Relationships with colonial residents included sharing knowledge while navigating the profound disruption of European occupation. She was the daughter of Moorooboora and a wife of Bungaree, but her own leadership deserves recognition. The plaque represents her broader connection with Camp Cove, rather than identifying the exact position of a home, a distinction made clear in the council's historical account.

🎼 Dame Joan Sutherland

Joan Sutherland was born at her family's Point Piper home in 1926 and lived at Clyde Cottage in Queen Street from 1932 to 1951. These were the years before London training and the operatic career that made her internationally celebrated. A plaque outside the cottage recalls the long local residence. The familiar title La Stupenda followed much later, after years of development and demanding performances. Woollahra's connection is unusually precise: both a birthplace within the municipality and a childhood home occupied before her departure for Britain.

🎬 Genni Batterham

Genni Batterham grew up at Bellevue Hill before becoming a film-maker and an outspoken campaigner for disability rights. After a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 1978, she used film to confront the experience of impairment and exclusion. Pins and Needles, made with her husband Kim and directed by Barbara Chobocky, reached international audiences and won festival awards. She also wrote about attendant care and continued developing her art as her health changed. Her childhood district connects with a creative life in which the person being discussed insisted on doing the speaking, rather than quietly accepting other people’s assumptions.
